Early Days

David was only three years old when his father Gibson was drowned in the Murray River at Renmark.

His mother Annie continued to run the business for some years with the help of Gibson's step-brother, Henry.

Interesting to note then that David did not have a "normal" two-parent upbringing & that his wife died whilst his children were very young meaning they also grew up without "normal" parenting. This may answer some questions that had originally been put down to their dour scottish heritage.

Link to Don's memories of the early days.

Don's Recollections of his mother, Maggie Knox.

Don wrote piecemeal recollections of his childhood over a number of years as well as writing some specific memories that would be relevant to Lloyd’s kids. These he wrote shortly after Lloyd’s death. I typed them up for him but have no recollection of ever getting the document back for correction, of which there were certain to be many. Fifteen years later I have found the documents amongst Dad’s stuff and reproduce them here.

Maggie Knox with Don & the twins Neil & Lloyd.

Auntie Grace, Maggie's sister, with the boys at Graham Place, Prospect.
Maggie Knox died when Don was only 4 and her sister Jessie, took over the raising of the boys till she married and moved to Graham Place. This house and the yard feature in many photos of the boys and it is clear that the Thomson girls and Jessie in particluar continued to play an active role in their upbringing.
